However, CAIR has faced significant scrutiny and controversy. In 2007, the U.S. Department of Justice listed CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator in a [[Hamas]] funding case, a designation that led the FBI to cease its working relationship with the group in 2008. Critics, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), have accused CAIR leadership of promoting antisemitic rhetoric and anti-Zionist views, including defending Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and using language equating Israel with Nazi Germany. 

Key figures like Nihad Awad, CAIR’s Executive Director, have been criticized for statements that some view as delegitimizing Israel and promoting conspiracy theories about a "Zionist lobby" influencing U.S. policy.  Other leaders, such as Zahra Billoo and Hussam Ayloush, have made inflammatory remarks about Jewish institutions and supported violent resistance by Palestinians. 

Despite these controversies, CAIR maintains that it supports the civil rights of all Americans, opposes profiling, and advocates for dialogue and justice. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a tax ID number of 77-0646756.
