The '''Betty and Barney Hill abduction''' is widely regarded as the first widely publicized alien abduction account in the United States. On the night of September 19–20, 1961, the Hills were driving home through rural New Hampshire when they reported seeing a bright light that appeared to follow them. They experienced a period of missing time and arrived home two hours later than expected.

Under separate hypnotic regression sessions conducted by Boston psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon, both Betty and Barney independently described:
* Being taken aboard an oval spacecraft by humanoid beings
* Undergoing physical examinations
* Betty being shown a "star map" by the beings, later analyzed as possibly depicting the Zeta Reticuli star system

The case was investigated by NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena) and has been the subject of multiple books and a television film.
