=== Uranium (LWR) === Natural uranium is 99.3% U-238 (not fissile) and only 0.7% U-235 (fissile). LWRs require uranium enriched to 3β5% U-235 concentration, a complex and expensive industrial process. To produce 1 GW-year of electricity, a conventional LWR requires approximately 250 tonnes of natural uranium ore to be mined and processed into 35 tonnes of enriched uranium fuel, most of which is discharged as waste.
