The lighthouse, first put into service in the 1850s, was notable for having only two permanent inhabitants: its keepers. The island had a grim local reputation, as it was said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman β "the Grey Lady" β said to be the spirit of a passenger from a shipwreck in which only an infant survived, the infant having been found alive among the debris. === The Disappearance === On August 4, 1969, a small boat was dispatched to Great Isaac to resupply the lighthouse and rotate the keepers. The boat's crew found the lighthouse deserted. The structure itself was '''intact and operational'''. The keepers' '''personal belongings were left behind'''. A small boat that had been moored at the lighthouse was found nearby, apparently launched but drifting. Neither of the two lighthouse keepers was ever found. No explanation for their disappearance was established. === Weather Context === August 4, 1969, fell during a period of active tropical weather in the Bahamas. Hurricane conditions were developing in the surrounding area. The most likely conventional explanation is that the keepers attempted to evacuate in their small boat when threatening weather approached and were overcome by the sea. However, this is inconsistent with their belongings being left behind β an experienced mariner abandoning a lighthouse in a hurricane would be expected to take essential survival items. === The Grey Lady Legend === The local legend of "the Grey Lady" β the ghost of the shipwreck survivor β has been cited in popular accounts of the keepers' disappearance as a possible paranormal element. The legend predates the 1969 incident by many decades and gives Great Isaac an established supernatural reputation that has been incorporated into Bermuda Triangle lore.
