In the latest issue of UFO (published by California UFO), there's
an interesting article on what is called "Sleep Paralysis Syndrome",
part of the idea being that it is responsible for some reports of
alien intruders, ghosts, etc. I think it is something people should
be aware of as a possible explanation for bedroom visitations.
My own experience goes something like this:
Working on my computer, I had stayed awake all night long and didn't
go to bed until around 1:00 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. (Sleep
paralysis often occurs to those who are extremely fatigues.) I
``awakened'' about two hours later. My eyes still closed, I could
clearly hear the television set, which my girlfriend was watching in
the other room. I also became aware of a very peculiar, high-pitched
whisper-like voice, which seemed to speak in English, though I was for
some reason unable to form sentences from them. I immediately opened
my eyes, wondering who could be speaking so strangely. I was staring
straight at the opposite wall, thinking perhaps this person was
talking through the open window. But the clarity of sound indicated
that it must be coming from within the room -- perhaps my girlfriend
playing some kind of joke? I decided to get out of bed, but realized
that I could not move a muscle. I immediately realized that I was in
a paralyzed state (It had happened before, though not with my eyes
open), so I remained calm, waiting for it to lapse. Then, I felt a
very strong sensation of someone repeatedly shoving me downward into
the bed. I felt the force and the acceleration. Thinking that my
girlfriend was trying to awaken me, I was angry that she would use so
much force. I then realized that my eyes were not moving at all --
the features on the wall that I was staring at remained motionless.
Now I felt confused, and began to struggle with the paralysis. Soon,
I felt my mental state go through a transition, as though a veil were
suddenly lifted from it, and I was able to move. During the
transition, my view of the wall remained unbroken. I turned around,
still expecting to confront my girlfriend. Of course, she was still
in the other room watching television.
From my experience, it is very easy to see how people can believe they
have been visited by ghosts or aliens when in fact they were
experiencing a mixture of dream and "reality". While I do not claim
all alien visitations to be waking dreams, I suppose a portion of them
are, and someone not familiar with the phenomenon could easily be
confused.

Hmmm, this 'Sleep Paralysis' perhaps needs a little fine tuning to better
understand this. As one who has done quite a bit of study on altered states
opf consciousness (being a Buddhist practitioner, a student of the occult,
and yes I did grass once :), I should say that what you were experiencing
a brief period of 'lucid dreaming' state. Basically, it means that
your mind and body are in full sleep states, but you have full or
partial consciousness. Now, although some of what I have to say may
conflict with modern scientific thought, please bear with me... :)
After all that activity on the computer, you must have been quite
drained, to such a point that just closing your eyes would have made
you go unconcsious. You were so drained it probably shifted your
equilibrium and lowered your built-in psychic defenses, making you
vulnerable/open to interactions with the spirit realms. So, this spirit
starts talking to you and gets your conscious attention, but your body
still remains quite asleep. To those of you who've been concious while
asleep, it is quite an experience - you may 'will' your nervous system
to send signals to your arms and legs, but it's all sort of shut down
for the duration. Also, the energies that exist in the body can be felt
as sort of pulsing and shifting in this state, which could account for
how you thought you were moving. You also state how you could not form
sentences from words that were apparently english; occult literature
teaches that things like our brains, tissues, and everything need
energies from a super-physical source to operate, keep healthy or
heal. In this case, you being in a sleep state, your brain was on
'idle' mode, and thus not in a state to process the information that
you were receiving.
Overall, indeed, I am sure people who are unfamiliar with this stuff
would become confused. Any direct contact with the astral world by
most people is rather startling and frightening, in fact.

I have had hynogogic (going to sleep) and hynopompic (waking up)
hallucinations. They were pretty bizarre. One involved a dark
figure on the side of the speaking with the voice like the buzzing
of bees. They have been other weird things too. In many of these
things I have as far as I can tell called out to housemates. In one
house I lived in I was very close to other housemates. They stated
they heard nothing. In other cases I have felt paralysis, and that
someone had entered the room. That one a housemate did say that she
had entered my room to borrow a book.
It would be interesting if someone would look into this. If I
get energetic I may go and look at the local medical library to
see if I can find any info.
I have heard tales of people who thought they had sex with the
devil or demons, and have had people near them who noticed some
restlessness. Curiously the whole thing matched reports for the
last 500 years or so. This includes that the "devil" or "demons"
are all very well endowed and heavy if the person involved is female.
Reports include things like: "It was like having sex with a 400
pound brute." If the person involved is male it often involves
either being clawed with heavy claws or being frozen because the
vagina of female demons is supposed to be cold. The semen of male
demons/the devil (who is always personified as male) is thought
to be cold. Often the male devil/demons sexual organs are 'percieved'
(if that is the right word) as being made of flesh, leather and
iron or some cross between them.
Not to turn this into alt.sex.ufos but someone one made noises
that lots of abductions have sexual motifs but that is often
witheld for purposes of verification of people reporting such
things. Similarly the actual shapes of heiroglyphic characters
in UFO stories is supposedly witheld for the same reasons. Does
any of this ring any bell or bring anything particular to mind.
be seeing You,
Sends Steve

Sleep paralysis is very possible. I have it a lot
simply because my heartbeat slows down sooo much that the blood
hardly circulates and my limbs "fall asleep". It's very hard to
get out of bed until I get my heart beating normal again. There
fact that a person just woke up may mean that they are still
in low alpha wave state and therefore have very real looking
hallucinations...
