Overview
[edit | edit source]Perhaps the best-documented close encounter of the third kind took place on 27 December 1980, when airmen at two RAF stations in East Anglia witnessed something extraordinary. First radar operators at RAF Watton in Norfolk picked up an oddity on their screens. Then RAF Phantom pilots reported seeing intense bright lights in the sky. Former radar operator Mal Scurrah said:
"As the Phantoms got close the hovering object shot upwards at phenomenal speed " monitored at more than 1,000 mph.'
Later, airmen stationed at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk investigated a mystery fire in Rendlesham Forest. Sergeant Jim Penniston witnessed the encounter with airman John Burroughs. Penniston said:
"The air was filled with electricity and we saw an object about the size of a tank. It was triangular, moulded of black glass and had symbols on it. Suddenly it shot off faster than any aircraft I have ever observed."
The next day the object returned. Base commander Lt Col Charles Halt saw the flying saucer himself:
"I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It looked like the rising sun with a black pulsating centre. It appeared to be dripping molten metal."
Hall acted coolly, taping and photographing the object engineered by `an intelligence which didn't originate on Earth'. His tape and film were confiscated by visiting US defense officials. Former British Chief of Defense Staff Lord Hill-Norton has claimed:
"Someone is sitting on information that should be in the public domain."
Believably: 9/10 (Possible explanation: what the airmen saw may not have been a UFO, but a prototype of the Stealth bomber, which has a black triangular shape, a strange radar print and was, in 1980, ultra-secret. Project Aurora, a new ultra-ultra-secret Pentagon Black Budget reconnaissance aircraft, is probably responsible for all subsequent UFO sightings.

Three separate sightings of anomalous lights near a NORAD base in the UK. Official report filed by deputy base commander, who also taped the on-site investigation carried out by Air Police detachment. Occurrence produced many witnesses, some of whom swear a craft was sighted. Investigation hampered by conflicting testimony, Britain's Secrets Act, grandstanding by one less than credible witness, and possibly the "Control Group" -- A US Senator began looking into the affair, but abruptly halted and would not communicate further with UFO researchers.

Rendlesham Forest Incident
[edit | edit source]The Rendlesham Forest Incident occurred over several nights in late December 1980 near RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters, twin bases in Suffolk, England, then used by the United States Air Force. It is frequently dubbed "Britain's Roswell" and stands as one of the most credible and well-documented military UFO encounters in history.
Night One: December 25–26, 1980
[edit | edit source]Shortly after midnight, a security patrol at RAF Woodbridge reported unusual lights descending into Rendlesham Forest. Believing an aircraft may have crashed, a three-man patrol was dispatched to investigate. The patrol reported finding a glowing, metallic, triangular object bearing strange markings. The object was described as hovering or resting on the forest floor before eventually maneuvering through the trees and disappearing.
Physical Evidence
[edit | edit source]- Investigators documented anomalous radiation readings in the area where the craft was reported to have landed.
- Ground impressions — triangular depressions consistent with landing gear — were found and measured.
- Nearby farm animals reportedly reacted with extreme agitation during the incident.
Night Two–Three: December 27–28, 1980
[edit | edit source]Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt personally led a second investigation with a larger group of personnel. Halt recorded his observations in real time using a micro-cassette recorder — a recording that was later made public. During this investigation:
- Multiple anomalous lights were observed pulsing and moving erratically.
- A beam of light was reportedly projected down from one of the objects toward the group.
- Objects appeared to send beams of light toward the ground and toward Woodbridge base.
The Halt Memorandum
[edit | edit source]On January 13, 1981, Lt. Col. Halt filed an official memorandum to the UK Ministry of Defence describing the incident. This document, obtained via a FOIA request by researcher Dot Street, was released in 1983 and is considered one of the most significant official government documents relating to a UFO sighting by military personnel.
Official Explanations
[edit | edit source]British authorities offered several explanations including the Orford Ness lighthouse beam, meteor activity, and misidentification of celestial objects. Critics, including Halt himself, have strongly rejected these explanations, noting that personnel were experienced military officers trained in observation.
Witness Testimonies
[edit | edit source]Key witnesses include:
- Sgt. Jim Penniston – Claimed to have touched the craft and observed geometric symbols on its surface; reported receiving a binary code in his mind upon contact.
- Airman John Burroughs – First responder; reported seeing the initial lights and craft.
- Lt. Col. Charles Halt – Documented his observations in real time; has stated publicly he believes the objects were extraterrestrial.
