Devils Den UFO Incident — Master Case File

[edit | edit source]

The Devil's Den UFO Incident refers to the reported abduction of two United States Air Force servicemen — Terry Lovelace and a colleague known publicly as "Toby" — from a remote campsite in Devil's Den State Park in northwestern Arkansas in June 1977. The men, both trained medics stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, had traveled to the park for a two-night camping trip to photograph eagles and wildlife when they encountered a massive triangular craft, lost consciousness, and woke the following morning suffering from severe radiation burns, extreme dehydration, and four hours of unaccounted-for time.

The case remained secret for nearly four decades. The catalyst for disclosure was a 2012 routine X-ray that revealed an anomalous triangular metallic object embedded 1.5 inches deep in Lovelace's thigh — a piece of metal with two fine wires attached, which radiologists described as appearing manufactured rather than naturally occurring. The discovery triggered a flood of nightmares and recovered memories that Lovelace had suppressed since 1977.

Lovelace published his account in 2018 as "Incident at Devil's Den: A True Story", followed by a sequel "Devil's Den: The Reckoning" in 2020. He has spoken at venues including Yale University and the Ozark Mountain UFO Conference, and was visited in June 2019 by Luis Elizondo — the former director of the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) and host of the History Channel series "Unidentified" — who traveled to Dallas to interview him.

The case is notable for the following specific features: the dual-witness structure; the physical evidence of the metallic implant; the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) interrogation immediately following the incident; the Google Earth photograph of the 1977 campsite showing a triangular area of vegetation cleared in a manner consistent with Lovelace's description; the 2016 chest X-ray revealing a grid-pattern of unexplained lung scarring; and Toby's documented psychological collapse in the years following the incident.

Primary Case Identification

[edit | edit source]
Field Detail
Incident name Devil's Den UFO Incident; Incident at Devil's Den; Devil's Den Abduction
Date June 1977 (precise date estimated; Lovelace's September 4, 1977, sketch redrew his original from memory; trip was approximately June)
Location Devil's Den State Park; Washington County and Crawford County; northwestern Arkansas; Ozark Mountains
Primary witness Terry Lovelace; USAF medic/EMT; Whiteman AFB, Missouri; later attorney and Assistant Attorney General
Second witness "Toby" (full name withheld in publications to protect privacy); USAF medic; Whiteman AFB; amateur astronomer; married with two children
Campsite location Remote high plateau in isolated section of the park; a treeline to the rear; open meadow to the front; chosen specifically to avoid other campers
Trip purpose Photograph eagles and wildlife; Toby also wanted dark skies for stargazing
Initial observation Three bright lights in a perfect triangle formation just above the western horizon; observed for approximately 15 minutes
Craft description Five-story-tall black triangular prism; massive; blocked out entire fields of stars; hovered directly over campsite; beam of blue/white light descended
Duration of missing time Approximately four hours; the men went to sleep and next recalled waking at dawn with no memory of the intervening period
Physical aftermath Severe sunburn-like radiation burns despite being in darkness; extreme thirst and dehydration; nausea; temporary hair loss; physical weakness
Immediate response Hastily packed camp and drove back to Whiteman AFB; reported to the base hospital
AFOSI response Two agents from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations interrogated both men; Lovelace's home and car were searched by consent; camera, film, notebooks, and Toby's hand-drawn map confiscated; Lovelace was hypnotized by agents to assist recall
Implant discovered 2012 routine X-ray of Lovelace's leg revealed a triangular metallic object 6mm per side, 1.5 inches deep in the thigh, with two fine wires attached; radiologists described it as appearing manufactured
Additional physical evidence 2016 chest X-ray revealed grid-pattern lung scarring; symmetrical drill-like scars on both tibia bones; no surgical history to account for any of these
Campsite photograph Google Earth imagery of the 1977 campsite location shows a triangular plateau area with vegetation cleared in a configuration consistent with Lovelace's description
Book (first) Incident at Devil's Den: A True Story by Terry Lovelace, Esq. (2018); Flying Disc Press
Book (second) Devil's Den: The Reckoning (2020); Flying Disc Press
Luis Elizondo visit June 2019; Elizondo traveled to Dallas to interview Lovelace; discussed implant and incident
Toby's fate Spiraled into insomnia, alcoholism, and psychological collapse; life derailed by the incident; never integrated the experience; details provided by his ex-wife Tammy in The Reckoning
Current status Lovelace resides in Dallas, Texas; continues speaking publicly; case remains open; implant remains in place

The Core Events

[edit | edit source]

Two young Air Force medics drove six hours south from Whiteman AFB to Devil's Den State Park in June 1977. They bypassed the established campgrounds in favor of a remote high plateau accessible only by what was barely a road. Their campsite had forest behind them and an open meadow in front — ideal for wildlife photography and, for Toby, for nighttime stargazing with his amateur telescope.

As they prepared to turn in for the evening, Toby noticed three bright lights just above the western horizon, arranged in a perfect equilateral triangle. The lights were stationary. They were too bright, too perfectly spaced, and too geometrically precise to be stars or conventional aircraft navigation lights. The men watched for approximately fifteen minutes, debating what the formation could be. Nothing in either man's Air Force experience accounted for lights arranged in a perfect triangle.

The lights began to rotate slowly as if on an axis, then ascended. They grew larger and brighter. What had appeared to be three separate lights resolved into the vertices of a single massive structure — a black triangular prism five stories tall that descended until it hovered directly over the campsite, blocking out entire fields of stars. A beam of blue and white light descended and bathed the men.

The next thing either man was conscious of was dawn. Four hours were gone. They were lying on the ground outside their tent, suffering from severe radiation burns, extreme thirst, nausea, and profound physical weakness. They packed the camp without speaking, left the park immediately, and drove back to Whiteman AFB.

Neither man spoke about what they fully experienced for decades.
