In the 21st century, mainstream scholars, scientists, and world governments have for the first time openly joined the hunt for intelligent life beyond Earth. But while such an effort has never been made public before, in reality, the search for proof of extraterrestrial life has been underway for decades. Starting around 1947, a series of unexplained sightings and mysterious events forced certain high-level members within the US government to officially become alien hunters. Projects Sign, Grudge, and Bluebook were government programs to research UFO sightings--and by some accounts, literally hundreds of the reported events were unable to be explained. Ancient Astronaut theorists suggest there is evidence that similar endeavors were even made thousands of years ago, sighting ancient astronomical observatories found all over the world, and new evidence that Babylonians were tracking the movements of the planets over 2,000 years ago.[1]

It was actually required that all officers fill out a form if they saw anything that might be regarded as a flying saucer. And they were told not to discuss their sighting with anyone.

Act 1

London, 7/20/2015 - consortium of scientists, Stephen Hawking, Frank Drake.  Yuri Milner announces "Breakthrough Listen", a 10-year, $100 Million search for ET life.  Using radio telescopes and data processing to look for astronomical signals.  Will survey ten times more area than previous surveys.

Starting in 1947, a series of events forced U.S. government members to become alien hunters.  There were 800 UFO reports in 1947. 

The one near Mt. Rainier WA made worldwide headlines.  June 24, 1947 businessman & pilot Kenneth Arnold saw a squadron of UFOs while flying near Mt. Rainier.  Estimated speed was 1200 MPH to 1700 MPH.  Fastest aircraft of the day was 600 MPH.  Arnold described them as delta shaped, and flying as if skipping a saucer across water.  Thus, the term "flying saucer" originated.  Twenty other reports came from the northwest U.S. within days.  The Roswell incident occurred two weeks later.

A day earlier, event brought military into the hunt.  July 7, 1947, at Muroc AFB (now Edwards AFB), Maj. J.C. Wise saw a bright, spinning, yellow object about 10,000 feet in the air.  Afterwards, all Air Force officers were required to report any UFO sightings, and were told not to discuss their report.  

This led to "Project Sign", an order to direct all UFO reports to the military, by order of Lieutenant General Nathan Twining at Wright Field on January 22, 1948.  Higher-ups redacted extraterrestrial implications, and initiated "Project Grudge", which became "Project Blue Book".  The Air Force closed Blue Book due to lack of evidence and lack of national security threat. 

the U.S. Air Force collected 12,618 UFO reports, of which 701 remained unexplained.  In disagreement with the military debunkers was Dr. J.Allen Hynek, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio State University.  Initially a skeptic, Hynek became more convinced during the course of his investigation of the authenticity of UFO reports.  His reasons were: 1) the Air Forced was forcing answers on every report, and 2) he talked with very credible witnesses.  UFO cases obtained through FOIA have had names and details redacted.

Theorists speculate on extraterrestrial involvement for decades, even since early civilizations.

Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, January 28, 2016, Astro-archaeologist Mathieu Ossendrijver discovered evidence that ancient Babylonian astronomers used advanced math -- a precursor to calculus -- to track movement of Jupiter.

Jupiter was associated with one of their most important gods, Marduk. There was a large mythology around his departure and eventual return. Many ancient cultures took great measures to study the heavens. There are megalithic stone observatories all over the planet that track stars, specific constellations.  Primarily Orion, Sirius, and the Pleiades. Stories of beings arriving from the Pleiades, Sirius, and Orion are associated with those observatories.   

Ancient interest in tracking the stars and planets may have been for orientation, navigation, or because of extraterrestrial contact. Theorists suggest that ancient obsession with the movement of the stars is evidence that they were the first alien hunters.

Act 3

Barron WI, summer 1934.  Coral Lorenzen witnesses a UFO. In August of 1951, Carol became a reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reporting on UFOs. In 1952, Coral and her husband, a former U.S. Army Air Corps officer, Jim Lorenzen, established the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization, or APRO.  The Lorenzens' investigative group had people in different disciplines who would study reports.  APRO had 3000 members compiling data that exceeded projects Sign, Grudge, and Blue Book.

Other civilian organizations followed APRO, including NICAP (National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena), founded and chaired by Admiral Fahrney and  Admiral Hillenkoetter, the first head of the CIA.  In 1960 Hillenkoetter stated:

  1. the UFO phenomenon was real
  2. it was not Soviet
  3. we had not adequately scientifically studied the UFO phenomenon

The government continued to deny UFO credibility.

On May 31, 1969, APRO member Walt Andrus created the Midwest UFO Network, which later changed to the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON.  MUFON grew into a large national organization with thousands of members.

APRO and MUFON were both inspired by UFO encounters.  Theorists suggest alien involvement, and that specific individuals have been chosen as emissaries.

Act 4

Delaware, OH, August 15, 1977, Ohio State University's Big Ear radio telescope.  Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman conducts research for SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.  Ehman finds the "Wow! Signal", a 72 second burst on the 1420 MHz band.  The Wow! Signal has never been explained or deciphered.  SETI plans to re-examine the area of the sky where it originated.

Seth Shostak, Ph. D. -- Senior Astronomer, SETI Institute -- explains that the SETI radio observatory consisting of 42 radio antennae  is designed to receive radio waves which travel at the speed of light and travel through dust and gas in space.  Shostak also explains how the observatory can confirm an extraterrestrial signal.

NASA's Kepler Telescope team has continued to search for signs of alien life.  In September 2015, the Kepler team revealed findings coming from the star KIC 8462852, also known as Tabby's Star.  Periodic dimmings by as much as 21% of the light have been found coming from Tabby's Star.  Scientists propose a possible explanation as a massive structure - a Dyson Sphere, built to harness the energy of the star.  The evidence suggests a Kardashev Scale Type II civilization, a civilization that can harness the power of an entire star. Theorists suggest that governments have ramped up the hunt for extraterrestrial life because they already know it exists.

Toronto, Canada. September 2005. Paul Hellyer, who served as the Canadian Minister of National Defense  announced his belief in UFOs, and claims that the United States government has concealed knowledge of UFOs. Hellyer believes these issues should be discussed.  One of the issues is that the U.S. could get involved in an intergalactic war.  Astronaut Edgar Mitchell also suggested multiple alien races visiting Earth.  There were reports of UFOs around military installations, and "attempts to destroy some of our missile tests and the missiles in flight."  UFO researchers suggest a secret military base has been built on the moon to combat alien threats.

July 20, 2014. The United States Army declassifies Project Horizon which was to create, by 1966, a military base (on the moon).  Reagan's legacy, the "Star Wars initiative", the Cold War era, may have been a diversion as the U.S. and Russia collaborated to put a space base on the moon.  Hellyer believes the Star Wars initiative was intended more to defend against extraterrestrials than against rogue states.

April 21, 2015. NASA launches an initiative  known as the Nexus for Exoplanet System Science-- or "NExSS" to lead the search for life in the universe. The NExSS is a multidiscipline approach to search for extraterrestrial life. Since the launch of NASA's Kepler Space Telescope in 2009, more than 2,000 exoplanets have been found. The Planet Hunters project is intended to allow  "citizen scientists" the opportunity to discover planets by visually examining light curves.  260,000 people have looked at 20 million light curves by eye.  NASA apparently believes life is on habitable exoplanets, and the public can help find it.

Jan Harzan, Executive Director of MUFON, has noticed increasing interest and calls from credible scientists, engineers and politicians.  The open hunt for extraterrestrials may be because governments already have knowledge of their existence.
