Mike: I've finally finished the translation. I've tried to keep the
flavor of the original text where it would make minimally acceptable
English style, otherwise I've been freer. Kaznacheev tends to speak
in chains of short clauses, most of which I have preserved in the
translation. Words enclosed in parenthesis are in parentheses in the
original; those in square brackets are comments outside the main text;
and the very few additions or corrections of mine are in curly brackets.
Frankly, I'm not impressed by this article, but I won't write a
detailed critique here. There is not enough information in
the interview to evaluate his work properly, though what is included
is not encouraging. I would take even Kaznacheev's existence with
a grain of salt as my francophone friends describe Paris-Match as being
like a supermarket tabloid.
Kaznacheev's microbiology is nonsense as anyone experienced in
growing cells will affirm. What he is probably seeing is contamination
by T-even phages (viruses) which are difficult to kill with
conventional disinfectants and which can infect healthy cultures via
aerosols. The other results with radiation and chemicals may be
explainable by his having used lysogenic strains.
He does not even say what kind of cells he used; the text in
one place says microbial, but the context suggests other kinds might
have been used.
Mitogenetic rays are old stuff, never confirmed outside the USSR,
and usually associated with Olga B. Lepinskaya. Water containing
dissolved radon would be a health hazard and radon-irradiated water
should be no different than any other water exposed to alpha particles.
When I was in grad school one of the big issues was whether
there were long range biological forces even within cells, but none
were ever found. All intra- and intercellular interactions have been
found to be mediated by chemicals (except vision, of course, and
some aspects of bioluminescence where the light eventually kills
the luminescent enzyme).
The discussion of heavy isotopes in aging tissue is also
nothing new. Even if it were true, and I doubt it, simple chemical
isotopic fractionation, known to occur in other biological contexts,
would explain it. Transmutation requires energies a million times
greater than those compatible with life, which is why radioactivity
is dangerous.
K's mindset may be revealed by his frequent reference to proteins.
During the Lysenkoist period in which he was educated, mention of
DNA was discouraged, and geneticists had to describe the effects of
mutagenic treatments as being on the proteins rather than on the nucleic
acids (DNA, RNA).
It would be interesting to try to track down his CV,
publications, honors etc. I'd like to hear more about NASA's alleged
lunar magnetic field simulator. His statement that his chamber
simulates the field 20 times farther than the moon's suggests that
he doesn't understand the origin of the lunar magnetic field. His
reports of the effects of his magnetic isolation chamber resemble
those of sensory deprivation.
Enough of the critique -- on with the text! (I think my English
has become Frenchified.)

Psychic War
[New Menace on the Earth
An exclusive interview with Professor Kaznacheev
of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
{picture caption } Professor Kaznacheev, Soviet "Psi"
by Marie-Therese de Brosses]
One might think that parapsychology, the idealist superstructure of
bourgeois science, was the privilege of a small circle of specialists,
of the Illuminati, so to speak, of the capitalist
West. Surprise!, at a recent conference on Man and the Planetary
Consciousness held in France at the Abbey of Fontevraud, the star
was a Soviet member of the Academy of Sciences, Professor Vlail
Kaznacheev, who has made astonishing discoveries in his Siberian
laboratory. In the interview given to our collaborator, Marie-Therese
de Brosses, he mentioned certain unsettling experiments concerning
communication between microbial cultures in sealed containers. He also cited
several cases of telepathy which occurred between various cities of the USSR.
These discoveries stimulated him to raise a cry of alarm: the extrasensory
powers of mankind could weak havoc in a future war or also be a weapon of
terrorists. He pleads thus for the international control of the applications
of this new "science."
[ New Menace on the Earth. International terrorists would be
able to employ extrasensory techniques to disrupt computer
systems or to paralyze the electronic guidance of aircraft.]
Marie-Therese de Brosses. The presentation of the experiments
which you have directed for more than 30 years on extrasensory
systems and the action at a distance was the real bombshell
of the Second International Symposium on the Freedoms and
Limits of Mankind. This communication was all the more
listened to because the Soviet work in this field is not
well known in France . Stories circulate which cause fear ......
Professor. Vlail Kaznacheev. Effectively, the significance of
this type of work can cause fear. The new field of research
leads us to revise our habitual conceptions. It is evident that
so many accepted and confirmed facts clearly proving the authenticity
of psychic effects at a distance of several thousand kilometers
must cause reflection. One does not have the right to ignore
the possibility of the evil use of such phenomena.
M-T. B. You mean to say that it is not unreasonable to fear
military applications of the paranormal capabilities of the
spirit, to imagine a form of psychic warfare.
Pr. V. K. Alas, no! This is why we have kept our scientific
work in our institute secret from the beginning. Since certain
criminal organizations {Mafia ?} in the world- who exist and
have enormous amounts of money- are buying this knowledge
and discovering psychic weapons, the principle menace will not
be from the Pentagon nor from the soldiers of the two Germanies,
but these international crime syndicates who are now involved
in terrorism and who will be able to create still more serious
incidents of extortion and terror in the world. I consider that
the danger to society has changed; it has been displaced by
international terrorism. We must not keep our work on extrasensory
effects secret. On the contrary, it is necessary that we
reveal all the work completely and at the same time do not
let it fall into the hands of criminal organizations.
M.-T. B. How will this be possible?
Pr. V. K. Through glasnost. Open, international, scientific control
is necessary. From the moment that one can, like my group,
focus on the techniques for developing the extrasensory faculties
of the spirit, it is no longer science fiction to imagine that
someone could disrupt computer systems of a country from a
distance through the power of thought, thus paralyzing, for
example, its air traffic or its financial system. This is why
it is necessary not only to become familiar with this work
but also to develop defenses against this type of effect.
M.-T. B. You go farther because you are the author of an international
agreement on the non-use of psychic armaments, which represent
for you a danger menacing all of humanity. I am reading an
extract from your text: "Biological energy clearly shows us the
extraordinary capacities and the potential possibilities of the
human organism in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases,
and it contributes to the detection of types of energy still
unknown.... On account of the unhappy experience with the
application of nuclear energy to military and political ends and
in order to prevent the unspeakable consequences of the eventual
utilization of psychic energy as well as the devices and apparatus
based on it, we address ourselves to all the researchers, to
world opinion, to the governments and to the private organizations
which work in the field of biological energy and metapsychics and
call upon them to resolutely speak out against all use of psychic
energy against humanity and take the lead in not using psychic
weapons under any circumstance and to sign an international
agreement on the subject." You are still upset!
Pr. V. K. Yes, and that is why, 30 years ago, at an international
congress held in Michigan where I went to make my work on
extrasensory effects known, I proposed to the Americans that
we establish an agreement between the scientists of the whole
world affirming their will not to apply this knowledge to secret
ends where they depart from normal ethics. This has been
signed by the scientists of the USSR and 19 other countries.
And last year, at a congress in West Germany, other scientists
joined the convention, including some from France.
M-T. B. This is, perhaps, a first step but, as it was individual
scientists and not governments who signed, what value does
it have?
Pr. V. K. It is only a beginning. The project will be proposed
to heads of state. This is why it is important for you to announce
it in Paris Match. Do do delude yourself. Psychic warfare is
more terrible than any other sort of warfare.
M-T. B. How is it manifested?
Pr. V. K. Beyond the possibility of upsetting computers which
I have just spoken about, if these methods are used by the military,
we could be victims of very violent aggression. The will and the
intelligence of men can be paralyzed; they are reduced to the
condition of docile slaves, and the most important discoveries,
the secrets and all the information in the intelligence and defense
systems of a country may be stolen, thanks to these techniques.
These methods may equally be used to liquidate the combat
capability of armies; they can also render populations totally
passive.
M-T. B. Do you mean to say that the military, both American
and Soviet, are working on these ideas?
Pr. V. K. This is why I demand that this work be open. I consider
keeping it secret to be a crime against humanity. It is necessary
to revise our laws. If we disarm ourselves biologically or
nuclearly, why should we permit ourselves to be armed psychically?
It is extremely serious! Psychic weapons can arrest the development
of infants, transform beings into mental defectives, into slaves
who, incapable of resistance, submit passively to everything that
one might want to inflict upon them. This is why we protest, and
why in my institute we are trying to set an example by not hiding
our work. You can visit us, you can see that everything is open.
M.-T. B. You are a physician, a member of the prestigious Academy
of Sciences of the USSR, and director of the Institute of Clinical and
Experimental Medicine of Novosibirsk in Siberia. You do not define
yourself as a parapsychologist: how did you happen to get interested
in this research?
[ New menace on the Earth. ' In my institute of experimental
medicine in Novosibirsk in Siberia, I studied parapsychology and
the healing secrets of the traditional medicines of Mongolia
and Tibet.']
Pr. V.K. There exists in the USSR a current --that one might
call Russian Cosmism - which is perhaps the most fertile part
of the intellectual richness of my country and in which belong
scholars as renowned as Florensky, Bulgakhov, Vernadsky (the
father of Russian astronautics), the physiologist Alexander
Chizhevsky and many others. All their work, at the same time
fertile and disturbing, is well known. I am trying to follow in
their trail and, outside of my work in therapeutics, I have tried
to increase the range of research despite the bureaucrats of
official science, the ministries, the academies, who considering
this type of work to be strange, do not see the necessity of
pursuing this line.
M.-T. B. Perhaps also because the hypotheses on which their
research is based do not agree with materialism!
Pr. V. K. True, and your remark is particularly pertinent
for the socialist period, but perestroika is in the process of
changing many things, especially in the field of science. In Siberia,
in the 60's and 70's, the need for a scientific renaissance was
very great.
M.-T. B. Is there a difference between Siberia and the rest
of the Soviet Union?
Pr. V. K. Yes, I make this distinction, for the central part of the
USSR - and especially the Moscow Academy of Sciences - is
concerned above all with treating diseases, which is useful, to
be sure , but in Siberia, (35 million inhabitants) we are confronted
with other problems for the population is faced with very difficult
living conditions. The climate, the demographic changes which
have affected this region ( and these include the concentration camps)
have created a specific mode of Siberian life, and it will be necessary
to create the scientific foundation for concentrating, not only Russian
but also European knowledge on disease prevention, cure, and
health maintenance. It will be necessary to create a new system
which can compensate for the difficult conditions of life for
the population and which can constitute a research group
centered on history, the environment, customs and health.
M.-T. B. Are you Siberian yourself?
Pr. V. K. Yes, I am from the Tomsk region, where my parents were
university people. Through my mother I am descended from the
populations that Czar Alexander the 1st expelled from Russia.
In 1933, we went to live in Novosibirsk where I started at the
Conservatory of Music (I was a tenor) and where in 1941, I was
a volunteer in the Siberian divisions. In 1941-42, I fought at
Stalingrad and was seriously wounded in the hip. After a long
stay in the hospital, I rejoined the army as an artilleryman
and continued to fight until April of 1945. Near Vienna, I
was wounded again and I stayed nine months in a hospital,
blind with my left side paralyzed. My injuries did not allow
me to continue singing; I entered medical school in Novosibirsk.
My stays in the hospital had changed me. Every day I saw my
friends die in front of me and that is why I chose medicine.
Even before I finished my studies, I learned that healing is
a temporary phenomenon and that it is very important to learn
how to change our entire way of life. I was appointed to the
Chair{manship} of Therapy of the {medical} faculty. I was at
the same time practicing medicine and serving as Dean of the
Novosibirsk Medical Institute. I founded the Siberian Academy
of Medicine, of which I was president for 10 years. In my program,
I would put the stress not only on treatment but also on prevention,
which led me more to be concerned with the environment and
with traditional medicine and culture. Thus I passed from
medicine to preventive ecology and I created the Novosibirsk
Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, which is, in
fact, an institute of mankind where a department is devoted
to people in good health and another to those under stress.
On the clinical side, we have only two hundred beds. In the
research process, psychology took an important place at first,
parapsychology next, above all, the study of extrasensory matters,
and biology. We have equally studied the medicine of the
traditional societies of Mongolia and Tibet, and we have
organized a center in Novosibirsk where I coordinate all the
activities of the scientists who are working with us on these
types of research.
M.-T. B. Is your Novosibirsk institute something altogether
unique in the Soviet Union?
Pr. V. K. Yes.
M.-T. B. How did the respectable academician that you are become
in such a short time the official specialist of a discipline forbidden
in the Soviet Union?
Pr. V. K. By developing the work of Alexander Chizhevsky in
my institute. Chizhevsky was interested in the effects of
periods of intense solar activity on the psychic powers of
human beings: he so explained the birth of revolutionary
movements (which cost him prison, though he was right!)
This has allowed us to demonstrate that even in the particular
conditions of Siberia, human psychic activity is very dependent
upon solar activity and that the farther north one goes, the
stronger this dependence is. We have established the correlation
between peaks of solar activity and human disease (those that
are born at the moment of intense solar activity remain healthy
during phases of high activity and those who are born at times
of low activity remain healthy during such periods.) We have
conducted these studies on thousands of persons: they are thus
statistically significant. This has lead us to elaborate a system
for selecting subjects apt for working under the conditions
of the polar night, of the aurora, and of the Far North. We have
offered our discoveries to Canadian scientists who have taken
them as bases for their own work on the specific problems of
workers in the Far North - and who have honored me
The regions of the Far North are very sparsely inhabited. Life
there can be very long and healthy and if, in the 21st century,
the earth has 10 or 12 billion inhabitants, the problem will be
simple: where will they live? We think that the northern territories
therefore will have to be very important for the new populations,
and using them is more realistic than the project presented at
the symposium by the American astrophysicist Brian O'Leary -
the specialist in using asteroids for colonizing space - who
wishes to place several million individuals on an artificial
satellite. I am not in complete agreement with this fantasy,
for 3 or 4 million people could live very easily and comfortably
in that region of the North where everything-- space, water,
vegetation, oxygen- would allow them to have magnificent
{living} conditions. The people who would inhabit it would live
well and for a long time.
[New Menace on the Earth. 'I have proved that cells isolated
in separate quartz containers could influence one another at
a distance thanks to the mysterious existence of 'biological fields.']
M.-T. B. Unfortunately, the Indians and Africans whose
demographic expansion is well known would not be able to
tolerate the climate!
Pr. V.K. Indeed. If the Indians and Africans were to live
3 or 4 years in these kinds of territories, when they returned
home they would see their live expectancies increased by 10
to 12 years. It is necessary to get to know the northern lands
of the planet: they are the most comfortable zones for long,
healthy and active life. Staying there 2 or 3 years is sufficient
to stimulate one for a decade more.
We have studied the adaptation mechanisms in the conditions of
the North. This territory is very favorable to certain people and
unfavorable to others, There exists a link with the nervous system
or with genetics. Also we have studied two types of human
constitution. One one side there are the "sprinters" who can
survive very high stress for a short time and the "distance
runners" who can survive moderate stress for long periods.
While studying the Northern populations we have discovered
that they are all distance runners. But among those sent to
work in these regions, as many distance runners as sprinters
are found, but these latter cannot live more than 3 years
in the North.
M.-T. B. You want to start great new migrations to that place?
Pr. V. K. Yes.
M.-T. B. Then it would be necessary to do some selection before
they depart!
Pr. V. K. It would only be necessary to distinguish those who
could pass their whole life there from those who must return
to their homes. The same illnesses do not appear in the same
manner in the two types of humans; thus, prophylaxis and
treatment must be different. We have achieved a very high
efficacy on this basis and our scheme is accepted in all the regions
concerned-- the Scandinavian countries, Alaska, Canada ...
M.-T. B. What is your most recent work? What have you discovered?
Pr. V. K. While studying the behavior of cells, their
mechanisms of reproduction, and the effects which they exert
on each other without any contact except visual contact. While
carrying out thousands of observations, we have been lead to think
that the true nature of living organisms is expressed in their
reciprocal influences and not in their life by themselves. We
have had to admit the existence of biofields. In order to explain
life, the work of others confirms the hypothesis according to
which a cosmic life, a life of 'fields' exists outside of living
cells.
M.-T. B. At the moment, this is only an hypothesis....
Pr. V. K. The considerable number of accumulated results lets
me state that it is not only an hypothesis, but a fact. The
experiments which we have performed on cell cultures in vitro,
begun in 1965 and repeated thousands of times permit us to
place in evidence an outstanding phenomenon of action at a
distance. These lead to a new understanding of information
and scientifically justify the work on extrasensory action at
a distance.
The experimental arrangements were very simple. In two sealed
glass globes place side by side we placed identical cultures of cells.
There was no biological, chemical or physical contact between
the cultures, only visual contact. Upon introducing a pathogenic
agent, a virus, to be exact, into the first globe, the cells died.
But, the extraordinary thing was that the second culture, which
was not inoculated with the virus, also sickened and died.
These cells, however, were isolated in the interior of quartz
bulbs. If I placed a third bulb of cells next to bulb #2 in which
the cells were dead, these cells died in turn. The contamination
continues. We have made a special device which holds 50 bulbs.
Each time the healthy cultures contaminate the others. There
is communication as if they see each other. It suffices to
introduce virus in one bulb , the contamination propagates and
death strikes in all the bulbs where there was no virus and the
process continues to infinity. These experiments can only be
explained by the presence of biofields
More astonishing still, we seem to be able to produce the same
effects with radioactivity.. If we irradiate one culture, it dies
of a disease linked to radioactivity. The same disease destroys
healthy cultures ( always separated, but placed side by side)
which we not irradiated. In photomicrographs, the cells killed
by the radiation cannot be distinguished from the dead cells
that were not. Between 1965 and 1980 using several types of
virus, diverse poisons, and radioactive rays, we have repeated
these experiments more than 20 thousand times on different
types of cells with always the same results.
M.-T. B. What made you do these experiments?
Pr V. K. As a physician, I studied the effect of radon water
( water irradiated with very low concentrations of this
radioactive gas ) in the Altai, a region south of Siberia where
cures are made. We have reported that this water has an
extraordinary beneficial curative effect, although the Ministry
of Health and the doctors told us it was impossible because
the strength of the radon was insufficient to produce a
therapeutic effect. The Ministry of Health wanted to close
the sanitarium. We have thought that radon could function like
Gurvich rays (Gurvich discovered that when cells divide, they
emit ultraviolet rays which, if they strike another cell, cause
it to divide. These rays are also called "mitogenetic rays" from
mitosis = division). We have used this radon water and reported
its mitogenetic action on cells and that gave us the idea to set
up the apparatus where the bulbs are placed next to each other.
Surprise: we have observed that certain cells act on others without
radon.
M.-T. B. This has led you to propose a new theory of information...
[ 'In the magnetic isolation chamber which I have constructed in
my laboratory, one could to cure cancer, insanity, and other
diseases, and even create supermen']
Pr. V. K. Not only a theory: we have learned that the information in
living material is is totally different from from the information in
dead systems ( like normal cybernetic systems). We recall the work of
Lavoisier on the conservation of living material and and knowing that
certain elements can be transformed into other elements; we have
studied the transformations in living material. We have begun not only
to research the transmutations at the level of one chemical element
into another, as the French scholar Louis Kervan did, but also to
study the stable isotopes (carbon 12, carbon 13, sulfur) and we have
demonstrated that in the course of life, the heavy fractions of sulfur
and carbon decrease in the tissues ( in patients with chronic illnesses
and among the healthy in old age) . The biochemical and genetic
processes that we are aware of are not sufficient are to retain the
carbon 12 and 13 in the human {body}; fields are also necessary.
Hence, we postulated the existence of a cold biological thermonuclear
fusion and this process would be the origin of the transmutation of
the elements. This problem has gone beyond the limit of pure research
and it it is often spoken of. According to us, this cold thermonuclear
fusion constitutes the essence of the life of fields. When we place
cells in magnetic isolation chambers, first the structure of the fields
dissipates, then the proteins die.
M.-T. B. Is it you who invented the magnetic isolation chamber?
Pr V. K. Yes.
M.-T. B. What is the interest in creating this apparatus which almost
completely annuls the terrestrial magnetic field?
Pr V. K. We created this chamber in order to perform experiments which
might separate the two forms of life, and it is averred that if we put
cells into this chamber, the characters of the fields disappear at the
fourth, fifth or sixth generation.
M.-T. B. What do these experiments prove?
Pr. V. K. These action at a distance phenomena are illustrations of
of the theories of extrasensorism {ESP}. They show that the true nature
of living organisms is manifested by their reciprocal influences as well
as by their life in isolation. It is thought that proteins are not
the only form of life. There are also the fields of reciprocal interaction
between organisms. Time and space are not the only principles which
govern the universe. The third component is information. Living
organisms are probably sensitive to fields of which elementary
particles could be their vectors.
M.-T. B. Haven't you tried, instead of studying cell cultures and
plants in the magnetic isolation chamber, looking at animals or
placing a human being in it?
Pr V. K. We have done so, but though it is possible to observe cells up
to the 10th or 12th generation, we can study beings only for 20 or 30
minutes under these conditions because an alteration of the brain
occurs: the difference between the two hemispheres disappears. We
do not understand why this happens, but, for humans such an
experiment is more conclusive than that observed in outer space:
on the Earth, for the 4 billion years that living material has existed,
it was never isolated from magnetic fields. Placing it in the interior
of this apparatus constitutes a great leap into the unknown. After 10
generations, the cells perish. As I said, it is the field structure
that dies first, not the proteins. Also, we think that in the case
of serious illnesses, it is precisely the field structure that suffers
and dies first. We first tried to prove this by putting animals into
the chamber, then we tried to cure certain diseases. In the course
of this magnetic isolation, they underwent very important psychic
modifications. They became incredibly more intelligent. We have
cases of leukemic children in which a veritable explosion of
intellectual capacities occurred. Those that could not draw were
discovered to draw very easily. The logic is clear: a
type of intellectual rebirth is produced. As above all it is the
field structure that is modified, this chamber offers a passionate
perspective on healing.
M.-T. B. It would be the dreamed of means to produce supermen!
Pr V. K. I don't know how far one could go, but it is a completely
new field of research which is perhaps even more important than
that done in Space where our cosmonauts go. One on side, there is
the adventure of technology, on the other, of life!
M.-T. B. Have your tried putting yourself in the chamber?
Pr. V. K. Certainly! How could I resist such an experience! And
I have reported its effects on me. Thus when I write, new images
come to be, ideas which I have never had before.. My friends who
have done the same experiment, have had analogous results. We
do not perceive the delicacy of these changes, but it is perhaps
unique mechanism for treating psychic diseases and maybe also
cancer. It is a {whole} cosmos that we do not know!
M.-T. B. By using this chamber to cure certain diseases, you expose
yourself to the charge of imprudence...
Pr. V. K. We have studied cells, and animals and we work with
people only for very brief periods. This is the first stage.
M.-T. B. Is this the only such apparatus in the world?
Pr, V. K. Yes, only we possess one. The strength of the terrestrial
magnetic field is 20,000 time weaker. We also have chambers which
lower it 50,000 and even 100,000 times. We use them for other experiments,
but never on humans. The electromagnetic field of the
moon is 1000 times lower than that of the earth. Also, after the
Americans had their astronauts land on the moon, they made a chamber
which recreated the lunar magnetic field. They also discovered that
those who tried it experienced an alteration in their perception of time,
that the growth of plants was different, etc., but that it was possible
for men to land on the moon. Only under our conditions, it is a little
bit as if we were landing twenty times farther than the moon.
[ New Menace on the Earth. "For many years I have successfully
experimented with the telepathic communication of photographic
images between 10 cities scattered across the whole extent of
the USSR.
M.-T. B. So, in reality the supercosmonauts are those who have
experienced your hypomagnetic chamber!
Pr. V. K. Absolutely! And we declare that humans cannot go very
far into the cosmos because the life of fields does not extend there.
At one time the Soviet Space Center planned certain experiments
based on my ideas.
M.-T. B. How are your researches supported?
Pr V.K. By my institute! As long as I am the director of this institute,
independently of all the hassles and despite the innumerable of
run-arounds of the bureaucracy of the Soviet ministry of health,
I continue.
M.-T. B. Without anyone rapping your knuckles?
Pr V. K. You can only imagine the pressures I am subjected to.
They want me to stop this work while accusing me being a mystic, of
idealism, and of spending my time on parascience. Fortunately, I
am in Siberia! I would not have the opportunities in Moscow.
However much I was involved at first with the problems of the
environment on the populations of Siberia, I also created a
research center for extrasensory communication, of which I am
the president. I am trying to foster a line of research based on
humanity, its nature and its intelligence. Thanks to the changes,
(alas, too slow) due to perestroika, we can now work more easily
and I hope now to succeed, because several years ago, I was brought
up before the tribunals on the pretext that I had committed actions
hostile to Marxism-Leninism. If perestroika is followed, it will help
me considerably as it must take into account a conception of
humanity very different from that of Marxism-Leninism. Perestroika
