Allagash UFO Incident -- Jim Weiner: The Witness Who Started the Investigation
Profile
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Full name | Jim Weiner (also: James Weiner) |
| Relationship | Identical twin brother of Jack Weiner |
| Background | Student at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt); pursuing a career as a visual artist |
| Role in the incident | One of the four primary witnesses; his post-incident neurological symptoms and recurring nightmares were the direct catalyst for the 1988 investigation; he was the one who approached Raymond Fowler at the 1988 UFO conference |
| Death | Jim Weiner died before 2024 |
| Significance | Without Jim Weiner's decision to approach Fowler in 1988, the Allagash case would likely never have been formally investigated |
Post-Incident Neurological Effects
Among the four witnesses, Jim Weiner experienced the most dramatic and medically documented post-incident effects. In the years following August 1976, he developed recurring nightmares featuring small grey beings performing medical procedures on him, neurological symptoms including seizure-like events, and persistent psychological distress. These symptoms eventually became severe enough to prompt him to seek out a UFO researcher.
The 1988 Approach to Fowler
In 1988, Jim Weiner attended a UFO symposium at which Raymond Fowler was a featured speaker. After the presentation, Jim approached Fowler and described the 1976 Allagash encounter. Fowler was "excited about Jim's story, especially the fact that it was a multiple witness occurrence" and suggested hypnotic regression. Jim agreed and conveyed the suggestion to the others. This conversation is the direct origin of the entire subsequent investigation.
Jim's Account Under Hypnosis
Under hypnosis with Tony Constantino, Jim described being levitated by the beam, transported into the craft, encountering grey beings, and undergoing medical examinations. His account was produced separately and was substantially consistent with the other accounts.
The Counter-Narrative on Rak
When Chuck Rak published his 2016 recantation, Jim Weiner provided a specific counter-account: he stated that Rak had once proposed a plan to "make a million dollars on the Allagash case" that Jim and the others declined on ethical grounds -- suggesting the financial motivation Rak attributed to the others was actually a proposal Rak himself had made.
