Betty and Barney Hill — Betty Hill's Abduction Account Under Hypnosis

Overview

Betty Hill's hypnotic regression sessions with Dr. Simon produced a detailed, emotionally vivid, and internally consistent account of the events she believed occurred during the missing time period. Betty's account is the more elaborate of the two, featuring extended dialogue with the beings — particularly with the figure she identified as the "leader" — and including the now-famous star map episode.

The Capture Sequence

Betty described the capture as beginning with the car being stopped on the road. A group of humanoid beings surrounded the vehicle. Both she and Barney were taken out of the car — both appeared to be in a semi-conscious or trance-like state. They were walked up a ramp into the craft. Betty described feeling calm despite the extraordinary circumstances, which she attributed to some form of mental calming imposed by the beings.

Separation from Barney

Once aboard the craft, Betty was separated from Barney and taken to a different room. She described the interior as having curved walls, soft indirect lighting, and cold metal examination furniture. The room was not large. There were no windows visible from inside.

The Medical Examination

Betty described a physical examination conducted by the beings, overseen by a figure she identified as the "leader":

  • Hair, fingernail, and skin samples were taken
  • Her body was scanned with instruments she did not recognize
  • A long needle*** was inserted into her navel — the beings told her this was a pregnancy test
  • The procedure caused significant pain; Betty cried out
  • The leader touched her forehead and the pain immediately ceased — Betty interpreted this as a form of pain control

The Book

During the examination, Betty noticed a book of unusual large size that contained symbols she could not read — not any alphabet or writing system she recognized. She asked to keep the book as evidence of the encounter. The leader initially agreed. Betty described holding the book and planning to bring it with her.

When the examination was over and she was being returned to the ramp, the beings took the book back. The leader said she would not be allowed to keep it. Betty protested that she needed it to prove the encounter had happened. The leader told her that the others had decided she would not be permitted to remember the encounter at all.

The Star Map

Before the book was taken, Betty had a conversation with the leader during which she asked where he was from. The leader showed her a three-dimensional star map projected or displayed in the examination room — a pattern of dots connected by lines that he described as representing trade routes and exploratory routes. Betty studied the map but could not identify any stars she recognized.

Under hypnosis, Betty was asked to draw the map from memory. The drawing she produced — a pattern of dots and lines — would become one of the most debated artifacts in UFO research history when amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish subsequently matched it to the Zeta Reticuli star system.

The Leader's Conversation

Betty described the leader as more communicative and personable than the other beings. He spoke to her using speech — not purely telepathic communication — and appeared genuinely curious about human customs and biology. He was puzzled by Barney's removable teeth (dentures), asking Betty why Barney's teeth came out while hers did not.

Return and the Attempted Memory Block

At the conclusion of the examination, Betty was returned to the ramp and reunited with Barney. The beings walked them back to the car. The leader told Betty she would not remember what had happened. Betty protested again, expressing frustration that she would have no proof of the encounter.

The account ends with the car being released and both Hills resuming normal consciousness at the second set of beeping sounds.
