The Anunnaki Mythology

The Anunnaki are gods of the ancient Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian pantheons -- divine beings who inhabited the heavens and the underworld and whose activities were recorded in the oldest written texts in human history (the cuneiform tablets of ancient Mesopotamia). In ancient Mesopotamian religion, the Anunnaki were the most powerful deities, responsible for fate, justice, and the ordering of the cosmos.

In modern alternative history, primarily through the work of author Zecharia Sitchin (1920-2010), the Anunnaki have been reinterpreted as extraterrestrial beings who visited Earth approximately 450,000 years ago from a planet called Nibiru (sometimes "Planet X"). In Sitchin's framework, published across multiple books beginning with "The Twelfth Planet" (1976), the Anunnaki:

• Genetically engineered Homo sapiens by combining their DNA with that of early hominids to create a slave race for gold mining
• Established the first human civilisations in Mesopotamia
• Departed Earth at some point in ancient history but may return on Nibiru's periodic approach to the inner solar system
• Maintained contact with select human bloodlines across the intervening millennia

How the Anunnaki Connect to DEN

In conspiracy literature combining Sitchin's Anunnaki framework with the DEN mythology, several specific connections are proposed:

The murals as Anunnaki messaging: The imagery in the Tanguma murals -- particularly the gas-masked giant controlling populations, and the bringing of weapons to a central authority -- is interpreted as depicting the Anunnaki's historical relationship with humanity: control, genetic management, and periodic return to assert dominance.

The underground complex as Anunnaki-compatible infrastructure: Underground facilities are specifically associated with the Anunnaki in Sitchin's work and its derivatives. The claimed DEN underground complex is framed as built to Anunnaki specifications or in anticipation of their return.

The reptilian-Anunnaki connection: David Icke's reptilian humanoid framework and Sitchin's Anunnaki framework have been merged by some theorists: the Anunnaki are reptilian beings, their human-hybrid descendants constitute the global elite, and DEN serves as an Anunnaki-elite control facility.

Assessment

Sitchin's Anunnaki interpretation has been comprehensively rejected by professional Assyriologists and ancient Near Eastern scholars:

• Sitchin's translations of Sumerian and Akkadian texts are not accepted by professional translators of those languages
• The astronomical claims (Nibiru as a physical planet with a 3,600-year orbit) are not supported by any observational astronomy
• The genetic engineering narrative has no archaeological or genetic evidence

The connection of Sitchin's framework to DEN adds an additional speculative layer to already undocumented conspiracy claims.
