Has anybody ever tried to discover how much information is already
available about those places that seem to be the focus of out interest?
The Sept 28, 1964, issue of Missiles and Rockets (pre-Klass) has an
article on Kirtland AFB that includes a photo of underground
construction in progress. An underground launch control center
for Minuteman missiles was going in. Very big and very deep.
The article was about simulating nuclear blasts to test the shock
resistance of weapons systems and includes this reference to under-
ground nuclear testing:
"At Pahute Mesa (NV), which is 7500 ft high, Atomic Energy
Commission is drilling holes 4,500 ft deep and up to 100-in.
diameter. Off the main shaft numerous tunnels are drilled
at different heights and directions..."
