A friend from outside Louisville told me this yesterday, and I haven't
seen it mentioned here yet. This was in the paper and on the TV news:
About 12:30-1:00 a.m. on 3/4/93 (Thursday), Louisville Metro Police are
responding to a reported break-in near the GE Appliance Park. A police
helicopter is dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the two crewmen
see a glowing light on the snow covered ground, but think it may just
be a bonfire.
The light glows brighter, and the helicopter spotlight is pointed at the
source of this light. The light source rises from the ground stopping
in front of the helicopter, at its altitude. The light circles around
the helicopter very slowly and draws closer. The crewmen think the
object may hit the tail of the helicopter and pull forward. While
moving forward, the object continues to circle around them. Gaining
speed to get away from the object, the helicopter reaches 110 mph,
and the object stays with them.
The helicopter radios in that they don't know what is happening,
that they are being circled by a light and are doing 110. Dispatch
calls on all units in the vicinity to respond. Two police cars are
near the area and take off to investigate.
Both patrol cars see the helicopter zoom by while being circled by
a bright light. The light was so bright that they could actually
_see_ the helicopter (not just the helicopter lights) in the night sky.
The helicopter slows down, and the object slows with it. Standing
still in mid-air, the object circles to the front of the helicopter.
The object emits three other objects towards the helicopter; the police
in the two cars below witness this. The emitted objects are very
slow and estimated to be the size of a soccer ball. The helicopter
pilot says that the approaching objects are so slow, that he isn't
afraid of it hitting them. He pulls to the right anyway to get
out the path of the approaching objects, then pulls back to the left.
The object then starts to leave. The police helicopter follows it.
The object gains speed and altitude, and the helicopter continues to
pursue it. The pilot notices that the helicopter is almost pointed
vertically while the object quickly loses them. After 5 seconds,
the object disappears above them.
The police later contact one of the airports and ask if they tracked
the object; the airport denies tracking or seeing the object.
The helicopter crewmen are veteran officers, and along with those in
the two patrol cars, are reported as very respectible and creditable
officers.
Does anyone know of similar incidents?
Any comments, updates, etc. would be appreciated.

Christopher,
How did the press respond to the incident? What page & in what newspaper
was this reported in? What tv station(s) reported it & when did they play
it? i.e. towards the end of the program as filler, or did they give it
decent coverage.

The TV coverage was on the WHAS (a Louisville station) Thursday evening
news (6:00-7:00 pm) and it included an interview with the two officers
in the helicopter.
The Courier Journal (a Louisville paper) had a front page story (which
continued into the section). I heard the Lexington Herald paper here
had a story on it also, but I am not sure of the dates or pages.

I saw the same story broadcast on Pittsburgh's local evening news. The
story was used as a filler piece in the last segment, and after the
story they graciously added that the supposed ufo was probably an
example of "balled lightening."
Balled lightening?

No, but.....
Dammit, I wish these types of occurences could happen in Richmond,
Indiana, or Philadelphia, where I could reasonably (i.e., afford to)
investigate this stuff. Seriously!
Maybe if I used that technique JW mentioned a while back about raising my
vibration rate and calling for a UFO.... Just a sec.
Oh, no! Too high! I'm attracting dog-like beings from the star Sirius!
