I was an Airman First Class and my occupation was Security
Police (official title: Aerospace Weapons Systems security).
Basically I was a guard, like the men who saw the Woodbridge
UFO. When I was at Woodbridge I was getting out of the AIr
Force, so I was there for about three months. Before that I
spent a year at Bentwaters, It was at Bentwaters I heard all the
weird paranormal stories.
The main story was about "East End Charlie" the ghost of a dead
World War II pilot that supposedly haunted the east end of the
runway. In WWII, Bentwaters and Woodbridge served as crash
runways for damaged planes returning from combat over the
English channel. East End Charlie was a pilot who died when his
plane crashed there. Flight crews claim to see a man on the
runway some nights in WWII aviator garb, but when they try to
get close to him he's not there anymore. The base is surrounded
by small forests, but no one could run from the runway in time
to get away as there is a lot of open land.
In the highly secured QRA (Quick Response Area) where fighter
planes are kept on alert for immediate take off in case of war
comes a very strange story. The QRA is surrounded by two 12 foot
hurricane fences topped with lots of barbed wire. The gates are
controlled by guards who check people's IDs coming in. They
must have a matching ID on file to enter or they're denied
access to the area. The outer fence has a motion detector that
will sense any movement if it's touched. A cable underground
between the fences also detects anyone passing over it. A tower
in the QRA is manned 24 hours and has an alarm system that
pinpoints the area where the alarm is traipped. The man in the
tower can see the whole area and will radio immediately to
security if the area is breached. Each plane has a guard of it's
own in a gateshack near it's hanger. A gateshack is a booth with
a seat and a heater where the guard can keep warm at night. He
still has a view of his entire security area.
In otherwords, the place is secured to the max.
Okay, what happened is this: A guard was in his gateshack one
night when he heard a tapping on the roof. He assumed it was
rain. The tapping got louder.
And louder.
Until it finally became THUMPING like something banging on the
roof.
The guard leapt out of his shack with M-16 in hand to see a man
standing on top of his gateshack, grinning at him. The man was
not military. Our guard turns (for a second) to the gate to see
if they are looking his way (it's a distance of about 400 yards)
and radios for backup. When he turns, "the man" is gone.
There is no where he could have run without being spotted.
Another area is the WSA (Weapons Storage Area). It's where
munitions are kept in armored shelters. It too has a guard tower
and is patrolled by men with police dogs and a occasional truck
with armed guards. The tower has metal steps so when someone
comes up them, you feel the tower vibrate with each step.
One foggy night a guard I knew told me he was in the tower and
while scanning the area he saw three men approaching the tower
in the fog. He radioed to see if they were ours. The gate said
no one was in the WSA at the time. Like the QRA, it's EXTREMELY
hard to get in without detection. Our guard calls for backup.
Meanwhile, he hears steps as someone is coming up the tower. He
jacks a round into his M-16, grabs a flashlight and steps
outside to look down. He sees three dark shapes rising up the
stairs (near the bottom) in the fog. The patrol truck rushes up
to the tower and it's headlights hit the three figures. They
disappear and the sound of steps stops.
The guy who told me the story is not a B.S.er. When he told me
his tale, he looked shaken like someone in rehab telling their
darkest secrets.
Those are a few stories. I have a few more which I will put in a
textfile. Hope you enjoyed them.
